Once, when I was young and true,
Someone left me sad-
Broke my brittle heart in two;
And that is very bad.
Love is for unlucky folk,
Love is but a curse.
Once there was a heart I broke;
And that, I think, is worse.
This poem, entitled A Very Short Song, is by the American writer and poet; Dorothy Parker. She’s best known for her wit, wisecracks, and sharp eye for 20th century urban foibles. I saw the BBC cooking program “The Delicious Miss Dahl“ with the theme melancholy and Sophie Dahl ends the episode with a poem by Dorothy Parker, which I really loved. I have to get my hands on her poems, and I’ve found this book on Amazon which now is on my wish-list.
